Image File Types

JPG/WEBP – use these by default

PNG – use only use if transparency is needed (and ideally use TinyPNG to turn into 8-bit file)

SVG – use for vector graphics, like icons and logos

Image File Size

Compress the image file as small as you can while still keeping the quality high. Well below 300kb if possible.

Image Dimensions

Be aware of how the image will be used and size it appropriately. For awhile now I’ve said 1920px for full-width background images, but I’ve come to find that it can less than that, as small as 1600px.
